Popular director Anurag Kashyap has been venturing into acting from direction for a while now. Amid playing supporting roles in films, his most recent being in the Vijay Sethupathi-starrer Tamil film Maharaja. Kashyap has now revealed that working was very important for him because he wanted to fund his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap’s wedding. He even sent him a ‘Thank You’ card in the film.

During a recent conversation with The Huddle by The Hindu, Anurag Kashyap spoke about his experience working in the South industry. He revealed that after Imaikka Nodigal, he turned down a lot of films. But during the post-production for Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone-starrer Kennedy, he met Vijay Sethupathi at his neighbour’s place. Vijay told him about the amazing script of Maharaja and said that they had been trying to poach him. While Anurag initially said no, but ended up doing the film.

Anurag Kashyap told Vijay Sethupathi,  “I told him, ‘I need to get my daughter married next year, and I don’t think I can afford it.’” He eventually helped him, and that’s how the film happened. Maharaja, a sleeper smash, earned ₹190 crore globally, making it one of 2024’s highest-grossing Tamil films. It also starred Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam, Abhirami, and Divyabharathi in key roles.
