Vidya Balan Says It Is Ridiculous Bhansali Got More Credit For ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ Than Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi is deemed one of the finest movies by the actor. Everything about the movie is iconic. The dialogues, the setting, the music, the traits of each character and just about everything else have struck a chord among the audience. People just could not get enough of Alia as Gangubai. She received immense praise from Indian and foreign audiences for her performance in the movie as the titular character. But Vidya Balan is of the opinion that the credit for Gangubai Kathiawadi’s success is majorly given to the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

At Film Companion’s round table conference where Vidya Balan was one of the panellists, she said that when women-centric films do well, the credit is given to the director. And she finds this notion absolutely ‘ridiculous’. Vidya also said that female actresses have worked so hard and have reached a point where they are headlining films.

Talking about the shift in movies post-pandemic, the 43-year-old actress said that when the men’s films were not working, people said that female-centric films will also not do well. Citing an example of Gangubai Kathiwadi as a post-pandemic film that did wonderfully at the box office, she said that the film did well than most male-driven films.

Gangubai Kathiawadi can be called the turning point o Alia Bhatt’s career. Her portrayal of Gangubai, a kotha-owner, will be etched in people’s memory because they could not imagine her essaying a raw character like that. The cast of the movie also includes Shantanu Maheshwari, Ajay Devgn and Vijay Raaz in prominent roles.
