Vicky Kaushal’s highly anticipated historical drama Chhaava has stirred controversy ahead of its February 14, 2024 release. The film, based on the life of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is facing backlash from Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Uday Samant, who has called for a ban on its release due to alleged objectionable content. The contention stems from a particular scene in the film that reportedly depicts Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj dancing, which Samant and others find inconsistent with the historical portrayal of the revered leader.

Maharashtra Minister On Chhaava

The Minister has insisted that the filmmakers consult historians and subject matter experts to ensure the accuracy of the narrative, warning that the movie will face opposition if necessary edits are not made. While acknowledging the importance of bringing Maratha history to a broader audience, critics argue that the film’s depiction of Sambhaji Maharaj risks misrepresenting his legacy. Samant has urged the makers to address these concerns and present the film for review by scholars before its theatrical release.

This controversy highlights the broader challenge of balancing creative liberties in filmmaking with historical authenticity, particularly when dealing with revered figures. The uproar surrounding Chhaava is reminiscent of past disputes in Bollywood. In 2018, Padmaavat faced similar backlash for its portrayal of Queen Padmavati, leading to nationwide protests and demands for changes before its release. Similarly, Jodhaa Akbar in 2008 encountered resistance from Rajput groups over its depiction of Emperor Akbar’s relationship with Jodhaa Bai.
