If you follow K-pop, you may have come across a video featuring TXT member Hueningkai that is currently going viral on social media. The video, filmed by a sasaeng (a term for obsessive fans in Korea), shows Hueningkai standing on a road with a woman. This clip sparked controversy, as many fans viewed his association with a female as scandalous. The situation escalated to the point where Hueningkai felt the need to address the issue and apologise, but it raises an important question: why is it such a big deal for an idol to be seen with a woman? Many fans have come to Hueningkai’s defence and are questioning the toxic fan culture pervasive in K-pop. Read on to know more.
TXT’s Hueningkai Addresses Viral Leaked Video
TXT’s Hueningkai addressed the situation through a long DM on Weweverse that he sent last night at 3 AM KST. In his statement, Hueningkai revealed that he was meeting an acquaintance after a long time, and they went to a bar because only that place was open due to Chuseok holidays.
His friend ended up getting drunk. Kai explained that he could not have left her alone in such a state, so he accompanied her home and returned to his dorm afterwards.
The idol’s exact Weverse message read,
“I’m going to just say this because I’m so sorry to MOAs, and also because I don’t know why I should have to avoid [speaking about it]. I was with someone I knew, and it was a situation where I could not leave them and go, so I took them home and went straight back to the dorms myself. We ended up going there because it was the holidays and that was the only open place left.
I have hated bringing harm to the members since my debut, and I’m someone who’s a total homebody, so I rarely go out, but I ended up meeting my acquaintance for the first time in a long while, and it ended up like that, so I really deliberated on what to do. But I really couldn’t leave them alone, so I just quickly took them home and came back to the dorms. This was what happened, but firstly, I’m so sorry to have worried you guys.”
TXT Hueningkai’s viral video showed him dressed in an all black outfit and a woman who looked visibly intoxicated approaching him. He appeared to help her stand and support the girl when she stumbled. Many people on the internet dubbed the clip as scandalous just because a woman was next to a TXT member.
The clip had no context and was a harmless video that was taken secretly during the idol’s private time. What is more problematic about this issue is that the 24-year-old K-pop idol’s privacy was breached. Some people feel entitled to the idol that they stan, and while doing so, forget that they are human too, with private lives and friendships.
MOAs (TXT’s fans) were touched and a bit concerned at Hueningkai’s message. They said that there was no need for him to apologise for taking care of a drunk woman when it was the right thing to do, and they are sending him messages of comfort. They are also demanding TXT’s label, BigHit Entertainment, to take legal action against the person who leaked the video in the first place.
