Exclusive: Ram Madhvani Reveals Inspiration Behind Strong Female Characters: “I Am Very Thankful That I’m Surrounded By Strong Women”
In an exclusive interview, director Ram Madhvani opened up about portraying strong female characters.

Historical dramas about the freedom struggle often overlook the crucial roles women played. These stories frequently prioritise male figures and leave women’s experiences and contributions untold. In creative spaces, women’s voices can be silenced, making it rare to see their perspectives represented. However, Nikita Dutta opened up about her character in The Waking of a Nation and stated that her character is a strong woman with a voice. Hence, we asked director Ram Madhvani what inspired him to create a female character like that.
Ram Madhvani On Portraying Strong Female Characters In His Films And Series
“I am very thankful that I’m surrounded by strong women. My production designer is Meghna. I have four female DOPs. So, I’m constantly genuinely surrounded by strong women. When we were writing it, we knew very clearly that I wanted to make sure, whether I’m working on Neerja, Aarya or even the female characters in Dhamaka. In the Korean film, Amruta Subhash’s role was played by a man, and I said no, we need to make a female representation here. And I feel that I’m very interested in that, though I don’t go out there and write that train, and that is something that I don’t speak about and don’t want to. Hopefully, my actions are louder than words.”
Furthermore, “It’s very important that Poonam is somebody who doesn’t need any empowerment. I’ve not seen any woman who needs empowerment in my life. I think from my mother, who was a widow at a very young age. Very, very strong woman; she raised three children. It was all those stories that my mother went through. I think every family goes through having strong women. I’m very lucky to have had strong women in my life. “
