The Trial Season 2 Review: Kajol Gives It All In This Lackluster Courtroom Drama
Here's our review of the season 2 of The Trial: Pyaar Kaanoon Dhokha, starring Kajol and Jisshu Sengupta.

Courtroom dramas have a special pull, as they can keep you glued to the screen with the intense legal battles. The Trial: Pyaar Kaanoon Dhokha Season 2, featuring Kajol and Jisshu Sengupta, carries on as the Hindi version of The Good Wife. Released on JioHotstar on September 19, 2025, this six-episode run returns to Noyonika Sengupta’s journey. And after watching every episode, here’s what I liked and disliked.
Plot
The story follows Noyonika Sengupta, played by Kajol, dealing with her life as a lawyer after her husband’s public scandal. Rajiv Sengupta, portrayed by Jisshu Sengupta, steps into politics and faces a tough opponent, Narayani Dhole, played by Sonali Kulkarni. Along with that, they also deal with a family crisis after their younger daughter, Anaira, rushes to the hospital after a panic attack because of her parents’ heated argument on separation. But, anyhow, Noyonika and Rajiv choose to stay together for their daughters’ sake. On the other hand, Noyonika goes back into action mode and takes on tough cases. But the path isn’t easy, as Narayani targets Rajiv’s family and adds pressure to Noyonika’s life.
Performances
Kajol stuns as Noyonika and brings heart to the role. She embodies the character’s strength and vulnerability and makes us feel her pain, determination, and quiet resilience. Whether arguing in court or facing family turmoil, her performance feels natural.
Jisshu Sengupta delivers a good performance as Rajiv. He portrays the politician with sincerity and shows both charm and flaws. Despite limited screen time, he leaves a mark, especially when dealing with the political rivalry with Narayani.

Sheeba Chaddha gives her all, but the script doesn’t give her much to work with. Her character feels sidelined, much like in Season 1. She brings depth to every scene she’s in, but the show misses a chance to let her shine. Sad!
Asrani, a new face in the series, lights up the screen as a defence lawyer. His courtroom scenes are interesting to watch because of his energy and wit. Making his OTT debut, he steals every moment he’s in and adds much-needed spark to the legal battles.
Kubbra Sait, as Sana Shaikh, Noyonika’s loyal friend and consultant, has too little to do. Her screen time feels short, and her role doesn’t grow much from Season 1. She performs well with what she’s given, and I hope we get to explore her character more in future seasons. Karanvir Sharma’s role feels pointless. His character adds little to the story and literally left me confused.
Verdict: Kajol’s Powerful Acting Struggles Against A Bland Courtroom Saga
The season struggles to find its footing. Many scenes feel shallow and add very little to the main story. The cases Noyonika deals with feel predictable, and honestly, the legal battles lack depth. Courtroom scenes, which should have been the heart of the drama, play a secondary role.
Also, how one case which was wrapped outside the court raised my eyebrows. However, there are some moments when you feel you’ll get to see an intense scene, but but but, sadly, it doesn’t.
In season 2, lots of things were happening but on the surface level. Be it their family drama, court battles or other stuff, it feels underdeveloped. Honestly, the political angle could have been more interesting, but that’s just me hoping. The direction is steady but doesn’t take risks and sticks to a safe formula.
Also, the pacing seemed dragged at times. Compared to Season 1, it doesn’t push the boundaries of the legal drama genre or offer any kind of twists. If you are a fan of The Good Wife, you might want to check it out, but the adaptation lacks the sharpness of the original.
In the end, The Trial Season 2 has strong moments but falls short of its potential. The performances are good and can keep you engaged at times, but the dull script will not let you move ahead. From the underused cast to the thin courtroom drama, it’s a decent binge for fans of legal shows, but if you are craving something deep, you might feel let down.
