The K-pop MAGA Controversy: Why Jungkook, RM And Giselle Are Facing Backlash For Wearing A Hat
Find out why so many K-pop idols are being linked to the MAGA slogan.

The world political scenario is currently extremely sensitive. The entire globe is continually moving towards a more conservative political ideology, and multiple idols are coming under fire for knowingly or unintentionally supporting this ideology. In the most recent news, BTS members Jungkook and RM faced intense backlash for wearing a hat that said ‘Make Tokyo Great Again.’ Aespa member Giselle also received criticism for wearing a hat with the words ‘Make Comedy Great Again’ written on it. Here is the K-pop MAGA Controversy explained.
What Is The K-Pop MAGA Hat Controversy
On June 13, BTS surprised fans by having a mini reunion at J-Hope’s final concert. Jungkook was also present with his members, but what caught a lot of people’s attention was his hat. It was a black hat with ‘Make Tokyo Great Again” written on it. An old mirror selfie of RM also resurfaced, where he was wearing the same hat. Giselle’s picture wearing the ‘Make Comedy Great Again’ had also received hate, despite the saying being a spoof of the slogan.
The reason this became controversial is because the saying is similar to U.S. President Donald Trump’s party slogan, ‘Make America Great Again.’ The slogan has now become associated with far-right politics, racism and xenophobia that is currently running rampant in America.
‘Make Tokyo Again’ has also been associated with some controversial Japanese leaders who propagate anti-Korean views and radical nationalism. People accused Giselle of trivialising or undermining the controversial slogan with her ‘Make Comedy Great Again’ hat. Aespa’s Karina also had her own controversy when she was accused of supporting a far-right South Korean nationalist party when the singer posted a picture wearing a red jacket and holding a peace sign, both being the party’s colour and symbol.

Response To The Controversy
Both Jungkook and Karina have issued statements of apology for wearing the hat and have said that they did it unintentionally and were not aware of the political implications of the slogan. However, this MAGA controversy serves as a reminder for all K-pop and even international celebrities to be mindful and aware of the clothes they wear and poses they strike, especially in times when politics is such a sensitive issue.
