The Broken News 2 Review: Sonali Bendre, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Jaideep Ahlawat Make Headlines For Brilliant Performance In Drama On Female Rage
hauterrfly Rating: 4 / 5

The first season of The Broken News was definitely a rollercoaster ride through the chaotic world of good and bad journalism. I believe the first season did a good job setting up a solid groundwork for what was coming next, giving the audience a sneak peek into the frenetic pace and ethical dilemmas faced by those working behind the screens in the cut-throat race of breaking the news first. A stellar cast including Sonali Bendre, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Taaruk Raina from the first season, coupled with a few new faces this season has made this season much more thrilling. With its adaptation from the acclaimed British show Press, and under the direction of Vinay Waikul and production by Sameer Gogate, The Broken News 2 is poised to deliver another gripping season that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats. This 8-episode series is set to release on OTT platform Zee5 on May 3. The second season of The Broken News 2 gave us some good performances coupled with a lot of chaos, minus the slight predictability factor.

Plot

In the second season of The Broken News, Shriya Pilgaonkar’s Radha Bhargava is back and this time, she means business. In the last season, the story ends with Dipankar Sanyal conspiring with the CM and tech giant Nandan Balchandran to declare Radha Bhargava a terrorist and Azaad Bharati an antinational media channel, Radha hence being sent to jail. This time, fresh out of legal troubles, Radha comes back to take down Dipankar, CM, Nandan Balchandran, and hence Josh 24×7. In the process of doing so, Radha keeps away her journalism ethics and loses the trust of her team and friends. With a lot of twists and turns and a lot more sabotaging, ahead in the show trust becomes a luxury. Amina Qureshi, played by Sonali Bendre struggles between these instances while trying to be honest and real to her ethics of journalism. All and all, the plot of the series, though quite chaotic and thrilling turns out to be predictable at certain points in the show.

Performances

Shriya Pilgaonkar as Radha Bhargava: Shriya Pilgaonkar nails it once again as Radha Bhargava in The Broken News 2. We’ve seen her as the fiery journalist in the first season, but now she’s back with a vengeance after her time in jail. Radha’s determination to shake up the whole system is palpable, and Shriya pulls off the transition from calm to hot-headed flawlessly. While her acting is top-notch as always, some moments in the script feel a tad exaggerated for the intense storyline. Still, Shriya’s performance keeps you hooked from start to finish.

Sonali Bendre as Amina Qureshi: Sonali Bendre shines as Amina Qureshi in The Broken News 2. She skillfully portrays the challenges faced by a journalist striving for honesty in a world where truth seems like a lost cause. Bendre brings depth to Amina’s personal struggles, making her character relatable and impactful. Despite the constant pressure from Dipankar’s TRP-driven agenda and Radha’s transformed persona, Amina remains steadfast in her commitment to delivering unbiased news. Sonali Bendre’s portrayal of a woman fighting against the tide of dishonesty, even among her closest allies, is both convincing and powerful.

Jaideep Ahlawat as Dipankar Sanyal: I’ve got to admit, I might be a bit biased, but Jaideep Ahlawat absolutely nails it as Dipankar Sanyal in The Broken News Season 2. From the moment he appears on screen, you can feel the intensity and cunning of Dipankar, just like in the first season. What really impressed me this time around is how Ahlawat seamlessly switches between being an editor-in-chief and an on-field journalist. It’s like we’re seeing different sides of Dipankar, especially when he reminisces about his past as an honest reporter. Making an antagonist convincingly evil yet relatable is no easy task, but Ahlawat pulls it off effortlessly, showing us the complexities of Dipankar’s character that make us root for him, even if we shouldn’t. The writers have really outdone themselves in fleshing out Dipankar’s character this season, giving us a deeper look into who he is beyond just being a journalist.

The supporting cast really knocked it out of the park, making the story feel so much more real. With all the new characters thrown into the mix, everything just clicked perfectly. Sure, sometimes it’s easy to get a bit lost with all the different plots happening at once, but the cast handles the craziness like pros, making it all the more exciting to watch.

Final Verdict

Every story has its quirks, but The Broken News 2 does a solid job of staying true to its theme throughout. If I were to tweak anything, it’d be a few moments that felt a bit unnecessary for the overall plot. Additionally, I felt there was room for more insight into Amina Qureshi’s life as a female editor-in-chief. Sonali’s portrayal of Amina was spot-on, but a peek into her personal life could’ve added some spice. Given the fast pace of the story, though, delving into character backstories might’ve been wishful thinking. And yes, there were moments where the plot felt a tad predictable. But hey, the cast’s stellar performances kept things interesting, so it’s all good in the end.

The casting was spot-on, with big props to Sonali Bendre, Shriya Pilgaonkar, and Jaideep Ahlawat for their powerhouse performances. What really stood out for me was how the series gave ample justice to its female characters throughout. It wasn’t just the main leads, but also the supporting women who delivered strong performances. And let’s not forget Taaruk Raina, who brought his A-game once again. Overall, I’d definitely recommend the series, especially if you’re into fast-paced thrillers and newsroom drama. The Broken News 2 hits Zee5 on May 3, 2024.
