Women leading the action genre, yes, we want more of that! And looks like Priyanka Chopra is here to fulfill this wish with her next release The Bluff, also starring Karl Urban, the movie is directed by Frank E Flowers. It has been watched. Set in the 19th century, The Bluff revolves around the story of Priyanka’s Ercell Bodden who has to save her family from a group of vicious pirates after they invade her island. The film has thrilling action sequences to keep us hooked but it misses to hit the mark from a narrative standpoint. Read our review to understand it better.

Plot

Priyanka Chopra’s Ercell Bodden confronts her haunting past when Karl Urban’s Captain Connor, along with his group of evil buccaneers invade her island. They capture her husband, and blackmail her for gold. Ercell is an ex-pirate and a skilled warrior, and she has to bring her old self back in order to save her family. Connor also has some unresolved grudges against Ercell, and the ultimate showdown happens between the two.

What’s To Like?

Action

Frank E Flower’s The Bluff has edge-of-the-seat moments particularly because of the action. There is plenty of action in the movie, and they are certainly not boring. Priyank’s film deserves the acknowledgement for serving us with  gripping hand-to-hand combats and sword fight scenes. Ercell is a one-woman army and it’s interesting to see how she equips herself to fight the group of evil pirates loaded with weapons. My favourite scene has to be the one in the beginning where Ercell fights two men. It’s when we realise that there is more to her than just an ordinary Caribbean woman.

Priyanka Chopra

The actor looks very comfortable in this genre. We have seen multiple films and series in which PC effortlessly manages to grab our attention with all kinds of action stunts. But in The Bluff, Priyanka Chopra has to simultaneously balance the character’s fierceness with the warmth of a mother and a caring wife. The actor seamlessly switches between these emotions and precisely why, Priyanka Chopra’s nuanced performance is here to win hearts again.

What Doesn’t Work?

The story is written by Frank E Flowers and Joe Ballarini and from a narrative standpoint, the film is quite weak. There are hardly any gripping moments in the narrative that makes us excited about it. It follows a linear form of storytelling which is predictable and at times tedious. There are hardly any surprise elements and it’s natural to get distracted.

While the visuals showcasing the landscapes of the Caribbean island have been captured well in the film, it does little to nothing to add substance to our viewing experience.

Another let down are the characters. The Bluff is based on pirates and how boring can the characters be? Here, they are very. The Bluff’s understanding of pirates is limited to the average stereotypical antagonist of a Hindi film. And therefore, actors can only do enough to make them work.

Verdict

If you want to watch Priyanka Chopra in an action-packed film with a loosely stitched plot, and not-so-engaging characters, you can try this one. Visually the film is decent. However, can’t help but look for a story too! It will stream on Prime Video from February 25.
