Every job has its rough patches that workers push through. The K-pop idol industry feels like one of the hardest out there. We’ve all heard the heartbreaking stories of endless hours of practice, unfair payment, and the toll on young artists and their bodies. Many stars have opened up about it and asked for a change. Amid NewJeans and EXO’s CBX’s legal battle, reports claim that an Idol Union to stand up for idols might kick off. Read on to know more!
Ten Singers Gear Up To Launch Idol Union
As reported by Koreaboo, the union wants better work shifts for the artists, strengthening their mental health and basic human rights. They also added that old problems like endless practice hours and more are on top of their list. The union wants the agencies to work fairly and not overwork them.
Seo Min Seon, who is a member of the Democratic Party’s Youth Policy Research Institute, stated that ten working singers have signed up. Their input will be beneficial for the union, as they have experienced it firsthand. The team aims to include more singers so that everyone’s voice will be heard.
A recent letter went to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism from the team. They urged them to check out how K-pop idols’ mental health is being taken care of during digital abuse. They want to know how they take care of online harassment and abuse towards K-pop stars.
Further, they also want changes in their packed schedules, which lead to a lot of body aches, exhaustion, and depression. The team also expressed displeasure over agencies controlling artists’s dating lives and other interactions. They stated that it harms their well-being.
