Disney+’s new K-Drama Tempest, starring acting powerhouse duo Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won, is supposed to raise excitement among netizens. Instead, the drama is trending online after releasing its new official poster, but for the wrong reasons. Fans are complaining about the low quality of the K-drama poster, despite it having a high budget and a top-notch cast. Read on to know more.
About Jun Ji Hyun’s Upcoming K-Drama, The Tempest Poster
The teaser poster, which was meant to create buzz for the much–hyped drama starring a cast of stars, has received immediate criticism from Korean netizens, who criticised the look as being retro, even cringeworthy. Far from setting expectations for a political thriller in suspense, the poster has been termed as “cheesy,” “tacky,” and “baffling.”
Comments flooded online boards as users compared the appearance to early 2000s visuals. One user commented, “Is the drama in the ‘90s?” while another made a joke, “Is that… Sandglass?” taking a reference from the old 1995 drama, which is famous for its dated but melodramatic appearance. Others drew comparisons to Jirisan, another Jun Ji Hyun drama, which got into hot water over tone and direction despite having such a great cast.
Most were stunned at the design level, especially with the star power that was involved. In Tempest, Jun Ji Hyun stars as Moon Ju, a UN ambassador who is caught up in an international political firestorm, and Kang Dong Won as San Ho, the mysterious figure who comes back from the dead. Hopes were high. Everyone was hoping for a futuristic, big-budget aesthetic to match the action-packed premise. Instead, the teaser poster with grand dramatic lighting, dark silhouettes, and an overly stylised filter left audiences confused about the tone of the show.
Despite the criticism, fans of both actors are keeping their fingers crossed that the actual series will live up to more than what the promotional posters hold out. Some even used the example that K-Dramas have had poor-quality posters but end up being good-quality shows.
