Exclusive: Tahira Kashyap Reveals Faking Periods In School: “I Was The Last…”
During the interview, Tahira Kashyap also shared her first period story and the taboo around menstruation in our country.

Period stigma is a big issue in our country where people feel ashamed or embarrassed to talk about menstruation in an open space. I mean, people still haven’t gotten used to the fact that it’s normal and every woman goes through it. Breaking this stigma is important to ensure that everyone feels comfortable about this topic. In an exclusive interview with Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist hosted by Siddhaarth Aalambayan, Tahira Kashyap spoke about her film Sharmajee Ki Beti and how adamant she was to break the stigma and normalise periods in the film.

Tahira Kashyap On Periods And Showing Period Stains On Screen
Tahira Kashyap recently made her debut as a director with Sharmajee Ki Beti, starring Divya Dutta, Saiyami Kher, Sakshi Tanwar, and others. On being asked about the sudden change in an advertisement showing the real colour of period stains, she said, “I was very adamant about showing period stains in the film.” She further revealed that “the thing is, a vagina is a vagina, periods are periods, and a bra is a bra; now move on with life. Why is such stigma and taboo associated with periods that we can’t even talk about it? But in this film, the two girls are talking as if it’s so normal, and it doesn’t make you cringe.” That’s a victory for me, said Tahira Kashyap. Truly, periods should not be treated like a disease.
The Last One To Get Her Periods In School
Tahira Kashyap also shared her period story and said, “Unfortunately, I was a classic case of someone who was the last one in my class to get periods. So, I knew everything about menstruation.” The Sharmajee Ki Beti director further revealed that she once faked her periods for a senior. She said, “We were all sitting and talking about periods and some pads. I was completely lost. Like, Pads? I know nothing about flow and show.”

“Later, the seniors asked me, How about you? I replied, Yeah, yeah, I got like a year and a half back. I just faked it.” She further added “There are many girls that I know that have no idea about periods. No one at their homes has talked to them regarding menstruation. So, when they get their first period, they get traumatised. They get scared, wondering if it’s abnormal. I just feel why subject to anyone with such trauma when things can be spoken about. And this is not just for the girls; this is also for the boys.” We agree!
