A new rom-com is releasing this week and it stars Amol Parashar and Mithila Palkar. It’s titled Sweet Dreams and Victor Mukherjee has directed the film. The movie also stars Meiyang Chang, Sauraseni Maitra and Faye D’Souza among others. It narrates an unusual story about a guy and a girl who see each other in their respective dreams every night. The film is nothing complex but a simple story that hopes to leave its audience with a thought about love and finding the right partner. But well, does it do that well? Let’s break it down for you.
Story
Kenny (Amol Parashar) is an influencer and runs a business too. While he has a stable career, his love life is quite messed up. After his last breakup around 10 months ago, Kenny has been seeing a girl Dia (Mithila Palkar) in his dream every night. His dreams are romantic and sweet, and Kenny only wishes to meet her once in the real world. He also discusses these dreams with his therapist (Faye D’Souza) but well her suggestions to get over Dia also go in vain. On the other hand, the audience is simultaneously introduced to Dia who has a stable corporate job (she’s still figuring out things BTW) and is in a serious relationship with a guy (Meiyang Chang) who sees his future with her. However, Dia too gets those dreams and is desperate to look for him with hopes that “HE” is her dream guy!
The two suddenly see each other during their getaways in Alibaug. On this trip, Kenny also meets a very charming girl played by Sauraseni Maitra. She is supportive and also motivates Kenny to find his dream girl. But lowkey she likes him too and fears Kenny leaving her after he finds Dia. The 1-hour 49-minute film proceeds to show us how both of them with the help of their friends finally find each other through social media.

What We Liked?
The film has a good story to tell. It’s not some boring love story following the typical and stale rom-com recipe. The film’s idea is unique and interesting. The idea of romance is fresh The Amol Parashar and Mithila Palkar film wants to make its audience think if one should chase the love of their dreams (literally) or be a little more aware of their reality (which sometimes can be sweeter than dreams).
The performances by Amol Parashar, Mithila Palkar and Sauraseni Maitra are heartwarming.
Amol Parashar as Kenny is adorable! The actor feels one with his character of a guy who is juggling hard between staying in the real world and finding a sweet escape through his dreams. Amol is convincing! Mithila Palkar’s Dia is confused, about her career and the guy both. She makes Dia quite relatable. Even Sauraseni Maitra delivers a very impressive performance. She brings some sort of sanity and stability to this story!
What We Didn’t Like!
However, the storyline is not quite engaging. The film fails at execution big time. The linear storytelling leads to nowhere. Sweet Dreams is bland with no major character arcs whatsoever. Even when the two lead characters finally meet each other, no relief or emotion is felt. It’s solely because one does not find themselves invested much in the storytelling. We are not rooting for the characters at all, and that’s the biggest drawback of Sweet Dreams. It forgets to package the interesting idea that connects with the audience and leaves them with something to think about. While Kenny and Roop’s chemistry beautifully matures, Dia’s journey of self-discovery feels half-cooked.
The story is not very convincing. I mean, at some point it feels dragged because the methods that are eventually used to find each other are nothing extraordinary. One might question the motive of this film at some point!
The supporting cast does not have a significant contribution to the narrative except that they only keep dismissing Kenny and Dia’s dreams while suggesting they move on in life. This element remains underutilised in the film. The music does not impress either.
Sweet Dreams is an average watch. While the actors have done a good job in the film, there is not much to talk about the film in general. It strives to tell an interesting story but in the most dull way possible. Victor Mukherjee’s film is just a forgettable watch. Sweet Dreams is streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar from January 25, 2025.
