What Did Swara Bhaskar Say?
Swara Bhaskar took to her social media and shared a video clarifying her remarks about Padmavat’s Jauhar scene. She stated that what she said about the same was being misinterpreted and spread falsely, claiming that she had said that Rani Padmaavati and the other women who committed Jauhar were “cowards.” The actress clarified that she didn’t say that Rani Padmaavati or other women in the palace were cowards. Swara stated that people who want to abuse her can do that, but they should abuse her for the right reason. She further clarified that what she said was that while watching the last scene of Padmavat, she thought, God forbid, if she were a r*pe survivor, she would feel like a coward for not having taken her own life and that if she had survived after being raped, she would feel like a coward. The actress asked, should we be making movies that send messages about how women’s purity is more valuable than her life, and should we be telling a r*pe survivor that it would have been better if she had died and that surviving the assault was a bad thing? Swara also mentioned the Nirbhaya case, saying that she should not be forgotten, as she fought against six r*pists until her last breath. Swara stated that Nirbhaya had a strong will to live and that people should not underestimate a woman’s will to live.

Her Comments On Jauhar Scene
For the unversed, Swara Bhaskar reportedly spoke about Padmavat’s Jauhar scene at the Woman, Life, Freedom talk in Delhi. She revealed watching it and saying that, God forbid, if she were a r*pe survivor, what was the film telling her? Swara said that she would feel like a coward if she didn’t commit su*cide to save her honour. The actress asked if this was what they wanted to tell in a society like ours, where she feels like there is a r*pe epidemic. The actress further asked if they wanted to tell the survivors that they don’t deserve to live, that if they actually would have been an honourable and brave woman, they would have killed themselves. She questioned if we were saying that r*pe is the end of a woman’s life? The actress called the Jauhar scene “problematic” and also recalled that there was one shot which made her so mad that she shouted “chii” loudly. Swara stated that there was a close-up of a pregnant woman’s belly performing Jauhar. She asked if they were telling her that the fetus, which might be a female, doesn’t deserve to be born because she might be r*ped by a Muslim ruler. Swara recalled waiting for five days to check if she still felt like that, and after five days she wrote a letter to Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
