Exclusive: Sunny Kaushal On Films Glorifying Problematic Male Protagonists: “We Should Look At Them As Work Of Fiction”

In the past one or two years, there has been a lot of conversation around some films and their attempt to glorify a sadist male protagonist in love. Many people questioned its negative impact on the young minds watching such films. In a recent conversation with Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba star Sunny Kaushal, we wanted to know about his opinion on the same as he played a grey character in his latest film. Sunny Kaushal spoke at length about this, read to know more.

Sunny Kaushal: “Directors Are Responsible”

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba star Sunny Kaushal said that he too has very opposing thoughts on this matter. He added, “I somewhere feel that films are fictional and you have to see it that way. When we were growing up watching films in the 90s, there were a lot of toxic characters like Baazigar, and Darr. But that never affected us. I never sat back and thought that I wanted to become like this or take this kind of revenge or kill someone. So it’s an individual responsibility also to understand that it’s fiction, nobody is saying that you should behave like this. A person has created their world and they are saying that the character in their world works like this, that’s it, or they think like this. That’s about it, it’s an entertainment thing. We individually also have the responsibility to know what is wrong and what is right. If we blame films, it sounds very stupid.”

Sunny Kaushal went on to say, “But at the same time, I do believe filmmakers have a certain responsibility. And I am saying that because I have played such a character in Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga. He is so disrespectful towards men in the film that I remember discussing with my director that this guy should suffer. I wanted to see that character degenerating and dying. That payoff for the audience will be satisfying to watch because I as an audience will enjoy it when this bad character is hurt. So there was nowhere glorifying such characters.”
