SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi Is Going Through A Major Title Controversy. Here’s What It’s All About

SS Rajamouli’s upcoming film Varanasi, featuring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj, has been making waves on social media. The film’s launch event solely garnered all the attention, with fans eagerly waiting to watch it on the big screen. But looks like it has already hit a roadblock even before its release due to a title controversy. Read to know what the scandal is all about.
About SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi
As per reports, production company Rama Bramha Hanuma Creations claimed to have registered the title Vaaranasi with the Telugu Producers’ Council. Despite this, the filmmaker proceeded with the same title, sparking a dispute over ownership. And as per the registration document with the Telugu Film Producers’ Council, the title Vaaranasi was registered by the production company in 2023. Ever since, it has been renewed from June 24, 2025, to July 23, 2026. Rajamouli and his team used the same title but with a different spelling at the launch at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.
It is important to note that the production house hasn’t filed a complaint yet, making it still unclear if they will negotiate with SS Rajamouli’s team or take legal action. If a complaint is filed, the film body will investigate and find out the rightful owner of the title. But this wasn’t the only controversy that the film is going through; the director also faced criticism for his comments on god during the teaser launch event.
SS Certain Hindu organisations, including Vanarasena and Gow Rakshak Sangh, were offended by Rajamouli’s words, accusing him of hurting their sensibilities. They filed a written complaint with the Saroor Nagar Police Inspector, accusing Rajamouli of “intentionally insulting Hindu deities” and making statements “with the intent of provoking religious hatred.” Varanasi, a film by SS Rajamouli, will be released in many languages in the summer of 2027.
