After nearly a decade of speculation, Smriti Irani has finally opened up about the real reason she walked away from the 2014 reboot of the iconic TV show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and it had nothing to do with showbiz. Speaking on a recent episode of We The Women alongside Barkha Dutt and Karan Johar, Irani reflected on her journey with the groundbreaking series.
Smriti Irani On Walking Away From Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi Reboot
Smriti Irnai revealed that while preparations for a comeback were already in motion back in 2014 complete with a ready set and a signed contract, her political responsibilities took precedence. “Everything was in place,” she shared, “but I received a call from the Prime Minister’s Office saying I was to take oath as a cabinet minister. That was the turning point.” In a moment that defined personal sacrifice for national duty, Irani made the difficult call to step away from acting. She even turned down a film opportunity opposite the late Rishi Kapoor at the time.
Recalling his words, she said Kapoor encouraged her to follow the greater calling of serving the country. For Irani, that advice cemented her decision. Now, as talk of the Kyunki reboot gains momentum again, Irani expressed genuine excitement about the project, calling it one of television’s best-kept secrets. She emphasised that while the new version aims to stay true to the original’s emotional core, it also seeks to resonate with a younger, evolving audience.
Meanwhile, actor Amar Upadhyay, who is reprising his role as Mihir Virani, confirmed that the reboot’s premiere has been pushed back. According to him, the delay was caused by technical tweaks specifically, the set’s visual appeal on screen needed fine-tuning. “Ektaa Kapoor is a perfectionist,” he noted. “This isn’t just any show; it’s a legacy. She wants it to be just right.”
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which aired from 2000 to 2008, became one of the most influential Indian television shows of its time and if all goes to plan, it might just be ready to reclaim that throne.
