No matter how much people talk about Smita Patil, she remains underrated. The actress was so ahead of her time that she wasn’t afraid to take on risky projects. Although she made a massive imprint in the parallel cinema of the 70s and 80s, she has also contributed to the commercial cinema of the time. But one experience didn’t sit well with her. And it was none other than the shoot of her rain dance in Namak Halal, opposite Amitabh Bachchan.
Why Was Smita Patil Uncomfortable?
The late actress’ role in Namak Halal was opposite to the type of roles she portrayed in artistic film projects. In the aformentioned commercial film, she was the love interest of Amitabh Bachchan, so naturally they had to shoot romantic scenes as well. One of the film’s famous songs– Aaj Rapat Jaye, featured the actress dancing in the rain with her co-star.
But she was not comfortable while filming that. Many years after the film was released, Bachchan reportedly published a blog which revealed that the Mirch Masala star was “uncomfortable” while they filmed the entire movie because she couldn’t “understand why she was asked to do what she was asked to do.”
But this wasn’t it. As per the media reports, in 2015, during the launch of Smita Patil: A Bried Incandescence book, Big B shared that when it came to the Aaj Rapat Jaye song, Patil “felt it was away for her culture and thinking.” He added that such movies were not in tune with her “culture.” The Piku actor recalled that the Mandi star expressed to him about working in multiple good movies but once, when she was at the airport, she experienced awkwardness and embarrassment after people remembered her work from Namak Halal.

Smita Patil’s Contribution To Cinema
The actress had immensely contributed to Indian cinema. She broke the barriers by taking up unconventional roles. Her work in movies like Mirch Masala, Mandi, Bhumika and Arth will forever be cherished. Along with that, her unapologetic nature in real life shines through her interviews. She was not afraid to speak her mind in public. We can safely say that she walked so that the others could run! We thank her for her contribution to the Indian film industry.
