Dusky Is Beautiful!

In India, the issue of colourism persists with very deep roots, and dark-skinned individuals often face discrimination and societal bias. This prejudice can take a toll on self-esteem, and it is disheartening to witness parents getting anxious about their daughters not being fair, taking it as a prerequisite for success or marriage. Renowned actress Shriya Saran, known for her impactful roles in movies like Awarapan, Drishyam, and Sivaji The Boss, recently shared her personal experience in a heartfelt conversation with Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist. She revealed how even her own mother used to be overly cautious about her getting tanned in the sun, shedding light on the challenges faced by dark-skinned girls in society.

During a candid conversation with Siddhartha Aalambayan on The Male Feminist, actress Shriya Saran opened up about her personal journey of growing up with unconscious biases related to dark skin. Despite her parents’ belief in gender equality, Shriya revealed that they unintentionally reinforced societal conditioning by cautioning her about sun exposure. Although they treated boys and girls equally, they were unknowingly influenced by the prevailing notion that fair skin was more desirable. She further said, “ ”Yeah unknowingly they did these things, often times there were some ladies who would pass comments but I didn’t pay heed because they didn’t matter to me”.

When asked if she remembers any such incident that happened to her, she said yes and recounted the incident when she was young and went to her swimming classes, saying” I remember they were held outside in the sun. Then one day, I came back home I was fully tanned and my mother was unable to recognise me because of how much I was tanned. Afterwards, she quickly started applying besan and other remedies on me to remove the tan, but the tan faded on its own terms, regardless of what my mother attempted.” Shriya continued to describe how this incident was quite amusing for her since it didn’t bother her at all, and she thoroughly enjoyed her time in the pool.
