Sharmila Tagore At Cannes 2025
The Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), which works towards the preservation of India’s film heritage, declared on Thursday that Ray’s Bengali classic from 1970 has been restored in 4K and will be screened at Cannes 2025. The movie, a poignant examination of human bonding and city isolation in a rural context, is one of Ray’s most acclaimed works. Along with Aranyer Din Ratri, Cannes will also feature the restored version of Gehenu Lamai, a 1978 Sinhalese-language film by the celebrated Sri Lankan filmmaker Sumitra Peries. Both the films belong to the festival’s Cannes Classics section, which honors cinema’s timelessness by showing restored versions to new audiences of cinephiles.
The red carpet premiere of Aranyer Din Ratri will be a star-studded event. Renowned director Wes Anderson, actresses Simi Garewal and Wasanthi Chathurani, and a number of other international cinema personalities will join Sharmila Tagore at the event. Recalling the honor, Sharmila Tagore was filled with great pride at being associated with this cinematic achievement. She revealed that it is immensely fulfilling to watch Aranyer Din Ratri come alive once again in such a large setting. Being at Cannes representing the film, she said, will be an extremely enriching experience.

Released in 1970, Aranyer Din Ratri is about four city-bred men who go on an expedition to the Bihar forests and find themselves face to face with their inner turmoils and social realities. With Sharmila Tagore, Soumitra Chatterjee, and others delivering performances of a lifetime, the movie is one of Ray’s most introspective and critically acclaimed efforts. With the countdown to Cannes, this screening not only celebrates Satyajit Ray’s legacy but also showcases the on-going efforts at keeping South Asian cinema alive and thriving on an international platform.
