Shabana Azmi’s Message To The Ban Brigade: No Right To Demand Bans On ‘The Kerala Story’ Or ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’
If you don't like the film, don't watch it!

Demanding a ban on a film or uniting to boycott it is one of the favourite trends online these days. No matter how true or fictional a story is, if people feel their sentiments are hurt because of the movie, a hashtag boycott or ban followed by the movie’s name immediately trends on Twitter. After the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan which faced a massive boycott online, The Kerala Story is also being demanded that it be banned by a certain section of people who believe the movie is not based on facts. But Shabana Azmi poses a very important question to those demanding the film’s ban. She asks with what right do people even want the film to be banned!

Shabana Azmi took to Twitter to set the record straight with those who are demanding that The Kerala Story be banned. She wrote on the micro-blogging platform that those who are demanding that the Adah Sharma starrer be banned are just as wrong as the people who wanted to ban Aamir Khan’s film Laal Singh Chaddha. Shabanaji also educated Twitterati a little bit by informing them that once the Central Board Of Certification green-lights a movie, no one has the extra-constitutional authority to ban it.
Those who speak of banning #The Kerala Story are as wrong as those who wanted to ban Aamir Khan’s #Laal Singh Chaadha. Once a film has been passed by the Central Board of Film Certification nobody has the right to become an extra constitutional authority .

It is as simple as if you don’t like the premise of the film, do not watch it. As simple as that. Also, people cannot choose to demand to ban what they don’t like. It does not work that way. And when did people think they have the power to sway the CBFC’s decision?

The Kerala Story roused controversy well before it was even released because a certain section of people believe that the film is not based on facts. The Adha Sharma starrer is based on the plot of how several women were forcibly converted to Islam and made to join the terrorist organisation ISIS. The Kerala Story has received a theatrical release after 10 scenes were deleted from the film.
