Selena Gomez Was Bitter Over Scrutiny On Her Weight, Says “Everyone Just Has Something To Say And…”
Selena Gomez acknowledged that while Benny Blanco prefers to ignore online criticism, she finds it harder to detach.

Selena Gomez has never shied away from discussing the challenges of fame, and in a recent conversation on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, she opened up about how relentless public scrutiny has affected her over the years. The singer and Only Murders in the Building star, who was joined by her fiancé, music producer Benny Blanco, spoke candidly about the pressures of social media and the impact of negative comments on her self-esteem.
Selena Gomez On Social Media Scrutiny
Selena Gomez acknowledged that while Blanco prefers to ignore online criticism, she finds it harder to detach. “Women have it much worse,” she pointed out, highlighting the disproportionate focus placed on female celebrities’ appearances. “It’s pretty wild… from what we wear to our bodies everything is up for discussion.” One of the biggest sources of scrutiny for Gomez has been her fluctuating weight. The singer, who has lupus, has previously spoken about how her medication affects her body, yet she continues to be the subject of harsh commentary. “Oh yeah, my weight’s a big one too,” she admitted.
“Everyone just has something to say, and it’s really made me sad. Not even sad because I don’t see myself as a victim; it’s just made me a tad bitter, and I feel guilty for saying that, but it’s true.” Selena Gomez revealed that criticism goes beyond just her body her heritage and even her personal relationships are constantly dissected by the public. “It’s like I’m not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough. From the people I date to how I look, there’s always something.” To protect her mental well-being, the Love On singer has taken deliberate steps to distance herself from social media. “I had to stop after a while. I still take breaks completely because I’m human of course, sometimes I read things. But most of the time, I ignore it,” she shared, adding that she currently doesn’t have any social media apps on her phone.
Despite the challenges, Selena Gomez remains pragmatic about the power of social media. “I don’t hate it I get that it’s useful. It’s just tricky.”
