Scream 7 Review: Neve Campbell Starrer Is Not Perfect But Entertaining!
Scream 7 starring Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox is going to hit theatres on February 27. Read our review here.
I don’t remember the last time when I did not have fun watching a slasher film. And same goes for Scream 7, new edition to the franchise starring the OGs Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers. The film also stars Isabel May, Matthew Lillard, Anna Camp and Joe McHale among others. Directed by Kevin Williamson, Scream 7 delivers exactly what it is supposed to, in other words, jump scares! Despite some writing flaws and poorly constructed characters, the film leaves us with scary times at the movies. Read our review.
Plot
The story is penned by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. The film revolves around Sidney Presscot living peacefully with her husband Mark Evans (Joe McHale) and daughter Tatum (Isabel May) until the ghostface returns again. This time, the ghostface reveals itself as Stu Macher, which is not possible since he died years back. But this mystery is intact till the very end of the film, and if you go the slasher film logic, there are always two killers! The story also explores the mother-daughter dynamics between Sidney and Tatum. While the mother is not keen on talking about her haunting past, the daughter thinks of herself as a weak one. The relationship arc between the two is another aspect that covers the majority of the plot.
What’s Good?
The film keeps us hooked with the multiple twists and turns which are very well-placed in the narrative. Scream 7 consistently keeps the tension and anticipation high with the sudden killings and the mystery around the killer. There are some unexpected moments that take you by surprise, which demands you to tightly hold on to your seat. The killings are gore, but still nothing compared to the previous parts of the franchise, however, they are enough for a jump scare.
The screenplay is decent too. The film specifically does not have any dull moments. The killer’s story as well as the mother-daughter dynamics are well-balanced in the narrative, leaving no room for us to feel bored.
Performances
Scream 7 does not have any weak performances. If you have watched slasher movies, you know what to expect of it. Even in this film, the actors have delivered as per the expectations. Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott knows her character inside out. The actor effortlessly displays the dilemma of an overprotective mother. Isabel May has also delivered a decent performance, and so has other actors in the film.
What’s Not Fun?
This time, not all the characters are interesting in the film. There are more characters written specifically to just be killed, IYKYK! The boyfriend and friends of Tatum, who by a slasher film logic are always the suspects, hardly had my attention this time. They were poorly written characters, who had little to add.
The climax is less thrilling compared to the anticipation that the story builds. For some the revelation can be a little less exciting if you are good at guessing, but that’s not the only reason why it’s underwhelming. The climax scene is a bit stretched and overdramatic in it’s writing, even if the dialogues are in question.

Verdict
Slasher films are no piece of art. Here, killings happen without a reason, and the lead takes it upon themselves to end the loop. The film follows a familiar storytelling pattern but the mystery around Stu Macher becomes an interesting addition. The ghostface is here to give us chills, so go and enjoy it at the movies. Also, liked this one more than Scream 6!
