Sanya Malhotra Defends Mrs.
During a conversation with CNN-News18 SheShakti 2025, Sanya Malhotra discussed how her film Mrs. received a lot of backlash from men’s rights groups who claimed it was ‘toxic feminism.’ She highlighted how people kept mocking the film because it showed the reality of women in Indian households, where they aren’t allowed to even work. Sanya highlighted how the problem with her character was not that she didn’t want to cook; she was doing it very nicely, but with zero appreciation from her family.
And even after proving to them that she was capable of running a household and wanted to do something outside, they didn’t let her. She wasn’t given the freedom. She said, ” The problem started when she wanted to do something else and showed the family that she is capable of managing the household and also wants to go out and pursue something she loves.” Malhotra pointed out how the story had reached the people it needed to reach.

Following the film’s premiere in February, SIFF – Save Indian Family Foundation, a men’s rights organisation, harshly criticised Mrs., accusing it of being toxic. On X (previously Twitter), SIFF described how men labour 8-9 hours at construction sites, railway stations, airports, factories, courts, police stations, restaurants, and national borders. The publication stated that “a happy young woman cooking food, doing dishes and pressing clothes of her father-in-law is oppression for her”.
