Women from around the world still face pay parity issues across all industries and sectors. This problem has remained unsolved despite efforts to deal with it. A lot of discussions around pay parity have also started in Bollywood with female actors getting the remuneration they deserve and being at par with the male actors. During an exclusive interview with Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, Sai Tamhankar shared her views on the matter and how Priyanka Chopra is a big inspiration for her,
Sai Tamhankar On Pay Parity
Sai Tamhankar, who starred in films like Hunterr, Bhakshak and Mimi has been affected by wage inequality resulting from gender bias. When asked if she ever had to fight for fair pay on set, Sai said straightforwardly: “It won’t change easily, it will take a lot of time. I really admire and look up to Priyanka Chopra. She gives me hope because she has made it possible. If she can do it, we can do it too. It’s important to teach this lesson—to be financially independent, regardless of gender.”

She also pointed out how important it was to be financially independent irrespective of gender. She said: “If I were to have a child tomorrow I would bring him or her up differently. It is critical that we teach that financial independence irrespective of one’s s*x”. During the same conversation, Sai also delved into the issue of patriarchy and how it is so deep-rooted in our minds that we just cannot escape it. She revealed that when she bought her first car she felt undeserving of it due to a patriarchal mindset but bounced back in seconds.

Through her admiration of Priyanka, Sai highlights the need for role models when fighting against wage discrimination. Priyanka’s success story is an inspiration to many women in the industry. It just shows that things can change, even if it is a slow and constant process.
