Richa Chadha Bashes Bollywood’s Shallow Representation Of Progressive Women; Redditors Support!

There has been a lot of discussion about how progressive women are shown in Bollywood films. In many films, strong and independent women are portrayed in a very limited way that basically focuses more on smoking and partying. Many women feel that these portrayals miss the mark, and actor Richa Chadha has similar thoughts. In a recent interview with Faye Dsouza, she expressed her thoughts on the typical way these characters are portrayed. Read on!

Richa Chadha On The Portrayal Of Progressive Women In Bollywood Films

Richa Chadha noted that in films that were released from 2010 to 2012, directors often tried to show progressive women by making them smoke and go to nightclubs. She feels this way of showing women is shallow, saying that just lighting a cigarette and dancing at a club doesn’t really represent what it means to be a progressive woman. Richa pointed out that these characters often have a crisis while looking stylish on the dance floor, with their makeup running down as they face their issues. She expressed her disappointment with how poorly these characters are written and questioned if filmmakers truly understand real women. Richa asked how older filmmakers can connect with these young women in their early twenties, adding that most people eventually figure out their lives as they grow older.

Reacting to her interview, Redditors started sharing their opinions. One user wrote, “I guess her point is not about making women drink smoke only, it’s about how they portray women in ultimate distress but looking hot in some random dance sequences serving glam. Kinda agree glamourizing woman’s pain has become a trope now.” Another user wrote, “I agree with these characters being poorly written. They lack depth and nuances and are so estranged from the real representation of progressive women. Progression is not a concept but a mindset and an attitude, and it cannot be delineated with just the party lifestyle; there are more layers to it and this lazy writing is a travesty of it. They can do so much better.” What do you think?
