Pakistani film Joyland is continuing to garner praise and appreciation from celebrities. This drama film was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2022 and has also won awards for its representation of the LGBTQIA+ community. What is ironic is that Joyland was initially banned from screening in its own home country on the grounds of it having “objectionable scenes” while it garnered immense appreciation from all over the world. Global icon Priyanka Chopra has also showered praises on Joyland and called it a must-watch. She shared her review of the film on her Instagram handle.

Taking to her Instagram stories, Priyanka shared a video snippet from Joyland and has also written a sweet caption for the makers of the film. She wrote that the film is ‘truly a joy to watch’ and also appreciated them for bringing this story to life. The Citadel star also urged people to watch the film by calling it a ‘must-watch’. Joyland marks the feature film directorial debut of the Pakistani filmmaker Saim Sadiq. The cast of the film includes Ali Junejo, Alina Khan, Rasti Farooq, Sarwat Gilani, and Salmaan Peerzada. It became the first Pakistani film to ever be premiered at Cannes. It has also won the Jury Prize at the festival and the Queer Palm prize as well. Even though it was banned initially, the Pakistani government green-lit its release after ‘minor cuts’ from the review committee.

The film also added another feather to its cap by becoming the first Pakistani film to be shortlisted in the Best International Feature Film category at Oscars 2023. The official Instagram handle of the film also shared a video of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai praising the makers and the cast of Joyland for bringing forth such a brilliant film.

The plot of the film revolves around the patriarch of the Rana family who wants his daughter-in-law to give him a grandson. But his younger son ends up falling in love with a transgender dancer at the erotic dance theatre he works at.
