FYI, Ponniyin Selvan-I is one of the most expensive Indian films with a budget of 500 crores. This adaptation of the novel was earlier planned by several actors and directors including M.G. Ramachandran in the late 1950s but nothing panned out. Even Mani Ratnam tried to adapt the novel in the mid-1990s and then in the early 2010s but remained unsuccessful. But the filmmaker managed to revive his “dream project” in January 2019 in collaboration with Lyca Productions. The film went on floors in December 2019 and was completed in September 2021. The film was shot in several places across India and Thailand.
