India’s Oscar Hopes Shift As Laapataa Ladies Exits While Guneet Monga’s Anuja Moves Forward

The Academy has unveiled its much-anticipated shortlist for the 97th Oscars, and while there’s celebration for some, it’s a bittersweet moment for Indian cinema. Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, which was India’s official entry for the International Feature Film category, has failed to progress to the next stage. The film, produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, was among 85 global entries vying for a place in the category but didn’t make the final 15.

Laapataa Ladies Out Of Oscars

The decision comes as a disappointment, especially after Aamir and Kiran’s aggressive campaign in the United States to promote the film. Selected by the Film Federation of India in September, Laapataa Ladies stood out from a pool of 29 Indian submissions, including Payal Kapadia’s acclaimed All We Imagine as Light. However, some industry experts had expressed doubts over the choice, arguing that Kapadia’s film, which previously won the Cannes Grand Prix and is nominated for the Golden Globes, might have had a stronger international appeal. There’s speculation that Kapadia’s work could still enter the Oscars race as an independent submission.

While Laapataa Ladies bows out, British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s Santosh, starring Shahana Goswami, remains in contention. Chosen as the United Kingdom’s official entry, the film earned its place on the shortlist and continues to represent Indian talent on the global stage. Santosh, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, has been lauded for its poignant storytelling.

Adding to India’s presence at the Oscars, Guneet Monga’s live-action short Anuja has been shortlisted in its category. The film delves into the harrowing exploitation of child labor in the garment industry and reflects Monga’s penchant for hard-hitting narratives.

Among the 15 shortlisted films in the International Feature Film category are entries from countries like France (Emilia Pérez), Senegal (Dahomey), and Brazil (I’m Still Here), showcasing a diverse lineup. As the Academy members prepare for the next round of voting, India’s hopes rest on Santosh and Anuja to bring home the coveted Oscars glory.
