Norwegian Embassy Calls Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway “Fictional Representation” Of The Case!

Rani Mukerji’s Mrs Chatterjee Vs Noway made a theatrical release on March 17, Friday. The film is based on a true story about the traumatic events faced by an immigrant mother Sagarika Banerjee. The movie highlights many aspects of injustices faced by the mother after her child was taken away by Noways’ Child Services. Post the release, the Norway ambassador in India wrote an op-ed for a leading newspaper to clarify certain claims made in the film.

Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway talks about many grounds on which Norway Child Services took away the child from their parents. Cultural differences were one of the major reasons why the Norwegian authorities took away the child’s custody. However, in their defence, the ambassador wrote that Norway has immense respect for every culture and that could never be the reason to separate a child from its parents. He also called the film factually incorrect on many levels.

However, furthermore, the ambassador also explained that Norway child services only claims custody if there is a case of violence, abuse or neglect against them.

The official statement also clarified the point raised in the film about child services making monetary gains by admitting more and more children to the care. The statement said that the services are solely dedicated to taking care of neglected children and are not a profit-driven entity. He also put faith in the audience to not believing everything that Rani Mukerji’s film showcases.

The statement also made sure to clarify that the whole process and work carried out by the child services department is equally hard for the department as for the child and parents. The department made sure to stress the point that it only deals with cases where children have faced emotional, and physical trauma in the households.

While it is never wrong to give clarifications about things that the public does not really know about, but also we can never get the entire truth on what really happened with the couple and which side is actually right!
