NewJeans Announces Decision To Appeal After Verdict Is Delivered In ADOR’s Favour
After losing their first trial against ADOR for the legitimacy of their exclusive contract with the label, NewJeans has announced that they will be filing an appeal in the case. The group members, Minji, Hani, Daniele, Harin and Haein’s legal representative, Sejong Law Firm, issued an official statement following the court’s verdict. They also stated that the group can’t return to ADOR and resume their activities as before because the trust between the two parties has been completely broken.
“Members will immediately appeal the judgment of the first trial, and we hope that the Court of Appeal will once again comprehensively examine the facts and the law on the termination of the exclusive contract and make a wise ruling,” read the statement released by the group’s legal team.
The Seoul Central District Court’s Civil Agreement Department 41 under Chief Judge Jung Hoe Il ruled in favour of Newjeans’ former label ADOR today. Their judgment upheld the group’s exclusive contract with ADOR and maintained that the label did not conduct any breach of contract or trust as accused by the girl group. This verdict has left them bearing the cost of the lawsuit, as their contract is still valid until 2029.
About The Legal Dispute
Problems arose between NewJeans and ADOR last year in November when HYBE, ADOR’s parent company, accused the label’s former CEO, Min Hee Jin, of attempting to orchestrate a coup against ADOR. Min Hee Jin, who is also the group’s creative director, ended up resigning from the post, and NewJeans announced that they will be leaving their company. The K-pop girl group then accused ADOR of mistreating the members and rebranded under the name NJZ.
