On December 29, ADOR officially announced that it had ended the exclusive contract with NewJeans member Danielle, sparking renewed online debate about HYBE’s so-called “girl group curse,” which refers to the mysterious departures of female idol groups affiliated with HYBE labels. A post pointing out how all recent HYBE girl groups had a member leave the team went viral on social media. Read on to find out more.
Netizens Discuss HYBE’s “Girl Group Curse” Following NewJeans Danielle’s Contract Termination
Following NewJeans Danielle’s exit, social media users began compiling a list of departures linked to girl groups within the HYBE roster, including LE SSERAFIM’s Kim Garam, who left the group briefly after debut in 2022; Youngseo, who left ILLIT even before the group debuted; and finally, Danielle’s departure from NewJeans.
The post discussing the company’s “girl group curse” went viral online and sparked intense debate among fans and netizens. Some are concerned about the rapid departures of female idols from HYBE, while others defend the company, saying the circumstances are interconnected and have their own reasons.
As for Garam, several fans have argued that the idol was protected and defended by HYBE in relation to the school bullying issue before her contract was eventually terminated amid strong public criticism and cyberbullying. “HYBE didn’t leave her, it was the public who did”, wrote one commentator.
Likewise, the departure of Youngseo from ILLIT remains unclear, leaving room for speculation rather than any proof of improper conduct. Danielle’s case is especially complicated, as it is linked to the broader legal dispute between HYBE and the ex-ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin.

While the debate continues, many K-pop fans are demanding greater transparency from talent agencies, better protection for young idols, and an end to speculative rumours that only harm members. While the HYBE “girl group curse” may be an interesting meme, many believe it obscures more profound issues within the K-pop system, such as online bullying and public persecution.
