Neena Gupta Feels Being Born As A Poor Woman Is A Curse, Says, “Situation Is So Sad”

Neena Gupta is once again in the spotlight for her unfiltered take on feminism and the struggles women face in India, especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. In a new interview with Lilly Singh, the Badhaai Ho actor was asked if she would like to revisit her past remarks on feminism ones that sparked backlash when she dismissed certain aspects of the movement as “faltu” or unnecessary.

Neena Gupta On Feminism And Women Safety

Cautious but sincere, Gupta said, “I don’t want to make controversial statements. The media twists things and takes them out of context.” When pressed by Singh on what she truly wants for women in today’s India, Neena grew visibly emotional. “I want them to be safe, but it’s not possible,” she admitted. “People say educate women. But when they get educated, they want to work, and then they face assault, they get raped. I feel it is a curse to be born a woman especially a poor woman.

The situation is so sad, I get goosebumps.” Her voice carried both frustration and helplessness as she highlighted the grim reality many women in slums and underprivileged communities face every day. “I want a solution,” she said, “but I can’t think of one.”

In a separate appearance on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Gupta elaborated on her previous controversial comments. “This idea that men and women are equal – I don’t believe that,” she said. “The day men start getting pregnant, then we’ll talk about equality.” However, she emphasized the importance of self-worth and financial independence. “Even housewives shouldn’t look down upon themselves. That role is as important. Self-esteem matters more than labels.”

Addressing the controversy stirred by her earlier interview, Gupta told Indian Express that her words had been cherry-picked. “They used just one part, the ‘faltu feminism’ bit to promote the interview and stir things up. People reacted without watching the full context. That’s not fair.”
