‘Mithya’ Review: Huma Qureshi, Avantika Dassani Make This Dark And Chilling Psychological Thriller A Compelling Watch

This dark psychological drama will give you the chills.

I’m a sucker for psychological thrillers. The nail-biting edge that they put you on can be a different kind of high. I practically grew up watching crime dramas and thrillers. And Rohan Sippy directorial Mithya starring Huma Qureshi, Avantika Dassani, Parambrata Chatterjee, Rajit Kapur, Indraneil Sengupta and Samir Soni is the next chilling psychological thriller drama on my radar. Mithya is an adaptation of the 2019 British TV drama Cheat. This six-episode series is streaming on the OTT platform Zee5. And I just watched this series. TBH, I’ve got a mixed feeling about this one.

Plot

The story of Mithya revolves around the lives of two women, Hindi professor Juhi Adhikary (played by Huma Qureshi) and her student Rhea Rajguru (played by Avantika Dassani). Set in the backdrop of a college based in Darjeeling, Mithya follows the story of Juhi who accused her student Rhea of plagiarism. But what happens when this student crosses all lines in a bid to get rid of the plagiarism charges? A dispute over an assignment soon turns into a dark and complex psychological war. With some crimes in the mixture, everything gets much more twisted and complicated. This series also touches the sensitive subject of infidelity as well as a teacher-student relationship. It also explores other complicated relationships.

Characters And Cast Of Mithya

Bhagyshree’s daughter Avantika Dassani has made her debut with the show and to say that the debutante did a good job would be an understatement. The actress will give your goosebumps with her acting skills in this chilling drama. Avantika takes the viewers through a series of emotions. But it is Huma Qureshi who will make you feel the emotional turmoil with her stellar performance as Hindi professor Juhi Adhikary. Her Hindi dictation as a professor of the subject lives up to the expectations of the viewer and it will make you want to Google the words every now and then. While the characterisation may seem a little flat, the actors breathe life into their characters with the performance. Huma Qureshi’s portrayal of a snobbish but realistic professor will make you have a love-hate relationship with her character. Avantika Dassani, on the other hand, perfects the portrayal of a psychotic student. Samir Soni has a small but meaty role. Parambrata Chatterjee delivers an impactful performance with his supporting character. Rajit Kapur also lends meaningful support to the story with his performance.

Final Verdict

TBH, the plot and the plotholes fail to make an impact but the actors and their performances will keep you hooked to the series. Mithya has great cinematography and direction but the constant similar flashbacks are slightly annoying and repetitive. It will make you bite your nails but parts of the movie will leave you feeling confused but in the end, it’s all about Huma Qureshi and Avantika Dassani’s performance. Mithya isn’t something you want to miss out on.
