Mere Husband Ki Biwi Review: Arjun Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar Starrer Is An Outdated Divorce Drama With Female Villains Like Daily Soaps!
Arjun Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Rakul Preet Singh starrer Mere Husband Ki Biwi is directed by Mudassar Aziz. Here's a detailed review of the film!

Mere Husband Ki Biwi is a very innovative and quirky title for a film about marriage, divorce and moving on. But was the story too? We talk about that but first the basics. Mere Husband Ki Biwi stars Arjun Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead roles and is directed by Mudassar Aziz. Backed by Jacky Bhagnani’s Puja Films, the movie’s trailer promised us a chaotic ride around a love triangle. However, this two-hour thirty-minute film boiled down to just being an overdramatic plot that at a point was equivalent to being a daily soap, minus good performance. And to look at the brighter side of the picture, some punch lines did land perfectly. Read on to know my detailed thoughts on this film.
Plot
Ankur (Arjun Kapoor) is a divorcee who often gets horrifying dreams about his ex-wife Prabhleen (Bhumi Pednekar). He has a very difficult time moving on from the traumas of his previous marriage and the only support he gets is through his friend played by Harsh Gujral. Well, things change for him and he gets lucky when an old college crush Antara enters his life. However, Ankur’s life is not as easy as it seems. The day he proposes to Antara is also the day when his ex-wife meets with an accident and loses her memory. She suffers from the condition of retrograde amnesia and goes five years behind, so she only has the memory of Ankur proposing to her for marriage.
This adds more confusion and misunderstanding to Ankur’s present relationship with Antara, however, they eventually decide to get married. But not that simple again. This time, Prabhleen also decides to get Ankur back and a catfight for the guy begins between her and Antara. Now who gets who is the suspense in this film. Interesting enough?
Performances
Arjun Kapoor as Ankur tries too hard to emote through his expressions only to make the character’s emotions look forced and unnatural. His comic timings are not that great too. However, Arjun Kapoor manages to pull off the frustrated and angry Ankur in the second half. One is reminded about the film’s message during a monologue by his character and that’s when we could see Arjun Kapoor at ease with the character’s emotions.
Bhumi Pednekar as the loud, quirky, can’t live life the usual way kinda woman is only convincing in bits and parts. Her character also deals with being overdramatic, and sometimes for no reason. It’s so hard to understand Prabhleen’s personality which as per Ankur is only, “Woh toh pagal”.
Rakul Preet Singh as Antara is sweet and understanding and turns but turns sly when her catfight starts with the Prabhleen. The actress is very comfortable and charming as the sweet woman but once the drama begins, she too starts making everything look obvious through her expressions, just like daily soaps, you see? This is quite evident when Antara is walking up to Prabhleen to challenge her.

Story
Mere Husband Ki Biwi has a very outdated story to tell. There could have been so many ways to make a story about divorce and moving on effective and impactful, however, this film decides to choose a path that lacked creativity and imagination. It’s so hard to take this film seriously because it does not take itself that way. The way Ankur’s trauma was exaggerated in the film seemed like he was in a marriage with a ghost and not a woman. Everything about this storyline was so overdramatic that there was no space to feel the emotions of the character. Even the circumstances and events in the film looked nothing close to reality, I mean, we understand creative freedom but still, a rather solid justification would have been appreciated. Mere Husband Ki Biwi yet again becomes a story where the two lead women are shown to be the real cause behind a man’s pain, with the same old wifey jokes, and foolish comparisons where a character says “ladki hai yaar Alexa thodi hai ki teri baat khatam hui aur woh turant jawaab de degi.” (She is a woman not Alexa who will response quickly one you finish speaking).
The catfight and the whole subplot of the two female characters planning and plotting to win over Ankur is something I am still processing. It reminded me of the daily soaps in the early 2000s when a woman gave sly smiles to her competitor like she had achieved something great by lying and acting. Are we still doing that? In fact, there is no chemistry between Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar or even with Rakul Preet Singh. In short, we don’t feel love in this film.
The film’s plot follows all the cliches like the main lead’s best friend giving him bad advice like always, rich parents who have no clue or concern with what’s happening in their child’s life, a big fat wedding that does not go without some unnecessary drama and relationship issues that makes you wonder if the characters have any kind of realisation or not! Kinda done with these!
Bad Lesson On Relationship
Mere Husband Ki Biwi is not a great film to take relationship advice from. It will make you question the decisions made by the characters at every point. The differences between Ankur and Prabhleen and the reason for their divorce made us question why such people even decide to get married, that too after four years of dating. The reaction that came from Antara after learning about Ankur’s past is very hard to approve as a woman. There were major issues with the characters which the film conveniently chose to ignore while diverting the viewers’ attention to the most unimportant aspects. At one point, I even thought that Ankur’s life would have been so much better if he communicated with the women in his life the same way he did with his friend (Harsh Gujral), who BTW had no life of his own. Ankur also did not use his brain.
Comic Timing
The only comedy in the film came from comedian turned-actor Harsh Gujral’s character. At first, he looked very awkward with his body language and expressions but gradually as the film proceeded, Harsh Gujral was at ease. His punch lines landed perfectly and well, he had most of the funny dialogue in the film.
Mere Husband Ki Biwi: Exaggerated, Overdramatic But With Some Comic Relief!
Mudassar Aziz’s directorial Mere Husband Ki Biwi starring Arjun Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, Rakul Preet Singh, Harsh Gujral and Dinu Morea is a film that has a very outdated, exaggerated and dramatic story with a rather less impactful messaging on love, marriage, divorce, compatibility and moving on. The characters in this film are too naive to even be in a relationship, let alone a marriage. There is hardly any chemistry between the on-screen couple and the performances can only be considered average, or a level less. There are some good punch lines in the film coming from Harsh Gujral’s character. Mere Husband Ki Biwi is currently running in the theatres. Have a good time at the movies!
