K-dramas have become everyone’s favourite in today’s time, and the popularity is insane. However, one of them was recently criticised for showing Indian and Arab cultures in a bad light, or rather for mocking the cultures when it was directly connected to the show’s plot in any way. What Is The Criticism
K-Drama To The Moon has come under severe scrutiny for a music sequence in the show. The show teaser ft Lee Sun-bin, Ra Mi-ran, Kim Young-dae, and Jo A-ram (formerly Gugudan’s Hyeyeon) was dropped on August 20. However, a particular scene in which the actors were weirdly dressed in a mix of Indian and Arab outfits did not sit well with the netizens. In the scene, the actors wore the Arab head scarfs and also wore bindi, which is particularly worn by Indian women. The use of desert and old stones to show the cultures in a stereotypical way was also criticised by the social media users. Most of them opined that the scenes looked like a mockery of both the cultures, and a very stereotypical representation was used to present the cultures which was not even related to the show.
In response to this, the MCB, the South Korean broadcaster firstly took down the teaser. Then they officially issued and apology in which they took accountability and accepted the ignorance of considering the perspectives of other cultures during the process. They called it an ‘unintentional’ mistake that was regretted.
