Bollywood actor Mallika Sherawat is known to always speak her mind and never feel guilty about it. She always challenges traditional norms by speaking against the wrong. Amongst all her statements, an old clip of the actor speaking about the rising crime against women in India took the internet by storm. This clip was recently recycled again after the gruesome rape and murder of the Kolkata doctor. The internet is appreciating Mallika Sherawat’s statement on how regressive the Indian society is for women.
Mallika Sherawat’s Statement On Crime Against Women
Mallika Sherawat made her Cannes debut in 2013 and depicted her motherland in a negative light, claiming that Indian society is regressive towards women. Speaking about her then-upcoming film, Dirty Politics, the actress revealed that India is a hypocritical country in which women are treated as second-class citizens to men. She made some bold statements against her country while representing it on the international stage which the people back then took in a wrong way.
After Sherawat returned to India, she held a press conference that sent shockwaves across the media community. During the interview, a female journalist pressed the actor to clarify her point of view, asking why she returned to India if she found the country’ regressive and sad’. To this, Mallika had a smashing reply. She said, ” “I think you need to do your homework well because I said Indian society is regressive for women. See the interview again.”
When asked again why she thinks that Indian society is regressive towards women, she replied by stating a fact that happened on that very day which was according to UNFPA, 40 per cent of Indian women are married below the age of 18. She pointed out that with female foeticide and infanticide happening virtually every day, with gang rapes making headlines in every newspaper, with honour killing, she said that she stood by her statement about the regressive state of the country towards women.
This clip was recently again shared by an X (Formerly Twitter), who wrote, “I pray to be able to speak this clearly, gracefully, and assertively.” Many fans reacted to this and shared their comments. One person wrote, “I will never understand why the “respected” actresses were whining about Malika’s statements. She was right. ” While another wrote, “The fact that she was crucified for this back in the day.” Internet praised the actor for being bold and speaking strongly about the truth.
