Recently, Malaika Arora had a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, during which she stated that since she started, dance numbers in Bollywood have come “a long way.” The reality show star further expressed that previously, dance numbers were all about glamour and spectacle, which were not often in tune with a woman’s individuality. She mentioned that filmmakers are working more consciously today.

Malaika talked about filmmakers integrating these dance numbers into the storyline with a resilient character context. She expressed that now it’s mostly about the “performance and presence” and less about provocativeness. Malaika talked about seeing it as evolutionary for women, where they can “own their space.”

During the conversation, the reality show star admitted that the item songs have a relation to the “male gaze,” but she has always viewed them differently. She expressed that for her, dance was about confidence and expression. Malaika confessed to focusing on having fun in the moment and bringing her own energy to it when she performs. What actually matters to her is to have that comfort and to be in control. The actress asked not to focus on such labels and celebrate the art while enjoying it.
