The world of filmmaking is not entirely consumed by violence and masculinity. Someone is also catering to female desires and starting a conversation about a more intimate space. And credit where credit is due, Lust Stories is back with its third instalment. Every time one thinks, what’s new? This anthology is here to surprise you and pick an interesting topic from the pool of taboos that exist in conversation, addressing women and their desires. The amazing directors: Vikramaditya Motwane, Shakun Batra, Kiran Rao, and Vishal Bhardwaj have come together to create these fun worlds, which also hook us with some fun performances by the terrific cast. Vikramaditya Motwane directs the story starring Konkona Sen, Radhika Apte, Vijay Verma and Abhishek Banerjee. The story revolves around women and their urge to spice up their married lives. Konkona’s Shona comes up with a plan that doesn’t sit well with Radhika’s character. Both the story and characters in this part are layered with high shock value. But the performances stood out for me and brought out all the emotions that one could probably feel while taking this wild ride. Put Radhika Apte and Konkona Sen in a frame together, and it’s a whole party!
Shakun Batra’s part features Radhika Madan and Ali Fazal. It deals with the messy divorce of a young couple. It shows that a lot of research has gone into understanding the psychology and emotions of two individuals going through something difficult, such as a divorce. The angle of lust is very interestingly put in this story, and this conversation is equally thought-provoking. There is a lot of tension in this 40-minute film, also enough complexities around modern relationships that make you think and question.
Kiran Rao’s story starring Sana Thampi and Gurfateh Pirzada adds quirk and some extra fun for the ladies. While the story is predictable, it’s not boring. The two actors create very organic chemistry on-screen, and there’s one specific twist which you don’t see coming that acts as a reminder: “It’s a woman’s world, bro, y’all are just living in it!”
Vishal Bhardwaj brings his touch of romance and love to this picture. But of course, maintaining the relevance in the modern world. Asking husbands to read smut for a better understanding of female desire is no longer a hush-hush topic, and the director presents this most honestly. Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth effortlessly make you blush and add impact to the story, further opening some much-needed conversations between a married couple.
Overall, Lust Stories 3 has to be one of those instalments in this franchise where all 4 stories worked for me. Some because of the stories, others for the performances. The process of watching the anthology is filled with emotions and excitement. We are surely discussing it with our girlfriends as well!
