When the One Direction member passed away last year at age 31, the entire world was shocked by his unexpected death. Now, seven months later, it has been revealed that he did not have a will made to decide who would inherit all his properties. According to reports, court documents issued last week state that Cheryl Cole, his former partner, has been appointed to manage his estate.
Under UK law, when a person dies without a will, the property of the individual typically goes to the lawful spouse, or if unmarried, to the nearest blood relatives. As per a report in the BBC, Payne’s ex-partner Cheryl Cole and music industry lawyer Bray are appointed as managers for the late singer’s money and property, but they currently have limited authority and cannot distribute it. The law also says that if there is no surviving spouse or civil partner, the deceased’s children generally inherit the estate.
Payne died on August 16, 2024, at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. A court case was filed against the staff members of the hotel for negligence. However, the charges were dismissed in February this year.
