The sudden demise of industrialist Sunjay Kapur this year has shaken not just the corporate establishment but also his family. The 53-year-old chairman of 30,000 crore mobility technology company Sona Comstar passed away due to cardiac arrest in June, triggering an overseas probe and a bitter fight for control over the company. In the midst of this tension, Sunjay’s sister Mandhira Kapur has praised his former wife, actress Karisma Kapoor, for being a doting mother to their children Samaira and Kiaan.
Speaking with NDTV in an interview, Mandhira expressed her utmost respect for Karisma’s efforts towards keeping the children in line despite the dire situation. She said Karisma has been able to maintain family bonds strong and deserves praise for keeping the children close to both sides of the family. Mandhira further said Karisma’s concern was always about shielding her kids, which, she believes, is the testament of a good and caring mother.
When asked if she has stayed in contact with Karisma following her brother’s passing, Mandhira confirmed they remain in touch and expressed hope that everyone involved, including Sunjay’s widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, can continue to maintain harmony. “This should not be a feud,” she stressed, emphasizing the importance of respecting their mother, Rani Kapur, and preserving her late father Surinder Kapur’s legacy.
In another conversation with India Today, Mandhira reaffirmed that Samaira and Kiaan will forever hold a rightful position within the Kapur family. She pointed out how their grandparents loved them and how her late brother himself devoted himself to his children. In her opinion, the bond between the children and the family is strong and she wants it to continue that way.

The bigger fight, though, rages on. Rani Kapur, Mandhira and Sunjay’s mother, has asserted she is the legitimate beneficiary of her late husband’s empire and the majority shareholder of Sona Comstar. She went on to allege she was coerced into signing documents adding Priya Sachdev Kapur to the company board. The company has now responded, serving a cease-and-desist notice claiming Rani has had no involvement in its affairs since 2019.
Mandhira, on the other hand, has expressed irritation that her family believes it is marginalised in a company founded by her father. Despite all this, she insists peace, respect, and harmony particularly for the sake of the children, should be the basis going forward.
