Before I dive into the nitty-gritties of how I felt about the first episode of Kabhi Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’s new season, let me take a moment to mention the nostalgia that hit me instantly. The show begins with the same familiar shot of Lord Ganesha against the backdrop of Mumbai’s waters. NGL, it brought back many memories. However, while watching the first show, one question that stayed with me was whether this show would still keep us hooked like before. Well, why do I say this? Let’s discuss!

The Plot

The first episode of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, starring Smriti Irani, basically sets the premise of the reboot season. We do get to see some old characters like Mihir Virani (Amar Upadhyay), Karan Virani (Hiten Tejwani), Nandini Virani (Gauri Pradhan), Gayatri Virani (Kamalika Guha), and Daksha Virani (Ketki Dave). There are some new young faces in this season too.  The first episode is also about giving us some flashbacks from the old show, since its inception. Tulsi (Smriti Irani) also misses Baa (we all do) and also has a brief interaction with her saas. It’s Tulsi and Mihir’s 38th wedding anniversary and we see a reunion of the entire family on this occasion.

In this new season, Kamalika Guha’s Gayatri Virani will be seen as the vamp as she only wants bad for Tulsi. A glimpse of Tulsi and Mihir successful marriage is also captured in one of the scenes when the latter surprises her with the wedding anniversary gift. The episode note ends with a teaser that something bad is coming soon, and what’s the sign for that, of course a thunderstorm (toofan).

Thoughts

While the show’s first episode could be nostalgic for some, there is also a feeling that the essence of the show is no longer. Times have changed, and while I am sure, the story would be set around the present time, however, the same old formula of a happy family, a selfless mother working around for everyone and without whom people fail to function, a typical vamp, the perfect main character bahu who does not let things go south, and the whole presentation of the show feels reduntant now. The lack of logic in a storyline and character will be hard to not criticise. The method of adding an old character by making Tulsi talk to her mother-in-law’s ghost was quite a questionable choice!

While it’s hard to say much about the show as of this point since it’s only one episode old, but certain elements, that once felt charming and new fails to have the same impact. Well, we wait for more episodes to see if the show still works for us or not.
