After BookMyShow removed Kunal Kamra’s content and stopped listing his shows, the comedian has talked about it. On April 7th, he took to his Instagram handle and wrote a letter. The comedian understands that BookMyShow needs to keep a good relationship with the government. However, his main concern isn’t just about being delisted. Read on to know about it.
He believes the bigger issue is how BookMyShow controls the way artists connect with their fans. By forcing comedians to use their platform instead of selling tickets directly through personal websites, the company has cut him off from the people who have watched him perform between 2017 and 2025.
BookMyShow earns a 10% share of ticket sales for every show they list, which is how they make money. But Kamra points out a problem: comedians, whether famous or new, end up spending 6,000 to 10,000 rupees daily on ads just to reach their own fans. This extra cost weighs heavily on artists trying to make a living.

The comedian stated that BookMyShow might say they can’t share audience details due to data protection rules. Still, he wonders who is really being protected and why. His request is straightforward—he wants the contact information of people who attended his solo shows. With this, he hopes to keep working independently and fairly, without depending entirely on a middleman. In response to his letter, one user wrote, “That’s a fair ask. This is how you conduct yourself with dignity. Well done.” Another user wrote, ” Vir Das was right about #twoindias , One is Promoting Propaganda Movies while others are Facing Consequences for Showing the Mirror 💔💔 Humor is now illegal in India.”
Kunal Kamra has received a response from BookMyShow. The ticketing platform clarified its role as a platform that helps sell tickets for events. The company stated that it operates neutrally and follows Indian laws. They stated that information circulating about their involvement has been inaccurate. BookMyShow explained that it only provides a space for organisers and venues to list and sell tickets for their shows, and the decision to include or remove a show rests with the organiser or the venue itself.
According to the statement, the content of any performance is entirely the responsibility of the artist or the organiser. BookMyShow clarified that the views expressed in a performance do not reflect their own. The company also mentioned that artists are free to sell tickets on their own websites if they wish to do so. BookMyShow affirmed that its goal is to connect people through shared experiences, respecting everyone’s beliefs.
