“Mr Reddy Should Address His Questions Directly To Mr Khan”:Kiran Rao’s Sharp Answer to Sandeep Reddy Vanga

Audience and the industry alike might have lauded Sandeep Reddy Vanga for his films, but there are few voices that continue to point out the underlying misogyny in his films. After Konkona Sen Sharma, Kiran Rao shared how she has not yet watched the film. Although her initial comment was targeted at the general state of the film industry, Sandeep Reddy Vanga took it rather personally and decided to make a public statement against Aamir Khan.

Kiran Rao Defends Aamir Khan

Kiran Rao not only defended Aamir Khan but pointed out Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s bigotry as well. Sandeep asked the filmmaker to check her surroundings before commenting on his films, like Kabir Singh. He further commented that people like Kiran Rao do not understand the difference between stalking and approaching, thereby taking things out of context.

Pointing out Aamir Khan’s song “Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai,” shot with Madhuri Dixit for the movie Dil, Kiran Rao emphasised Aamir’s act of publicly apologising for the song during an episode of Satyamev Jayate. Calling him one of the few mindful actors who reflect on their previous line of work and accordingly take responsibility for it.

Kiran Rao On Misogyny

In her interview with Quint, she further stated that she hasn’t watched any of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s films. However, she also clarified that none of her comments regarding misogyny in Bollywood films were directed particularly at his films, so she can’t possibly understand why he would take it on himself. While there is no need for Kabir Singh director, to assume he is being targeted, Kiran Rao was certain that she would continue to attack misogyny and bigotry in the industry, irrespective of what he thinks.

The controversy began in November 2023, when Kiran Rao was part of a session focused on gender sensitization, and she pointed out how stalking is often depicted as a glorified form of wooing in cinema. She was also intrigued by films like Baahubali: The Beginning, where the scene begins with a female warrior moving with remarkable agility among trees. This seems to have triggered Sandeep Reddy Vanga and therefore, his need to make a statement against Aamir Khan.

The filmmaker of the movie Animal were so triggered that on Monday, the official X handle of the movie replied to Kiran Rao’s comment emphasising that they have not made any assumptions, it was rather a fact she was targeting them.

Kiran Rao’s Answer to Sandeep Reddy Vanga

Above all, it feels absurd to hold Kiran Rao accountable for her ex-husband’s work. But she has a rather straightforward answer to Mr Reddy’s comment. She asks him to directly address his questions and concerns to Aamir Khan, as she is not responsible for Aamir Khan’s work. She would perhaps prefer him to talk man-to-man as opposed to directing his comments at her.

In a society where films that glorify violence, stalking, and misogyny are lauded, it is time we appreciate filmmakers like Kiran Rao who continue to voice their opinions and stand against bigotry. Kiran Rao has recently co-produced with Aamir Khan and directed the movie Laapata Ladies which is set to release on 1st March 2024.
