Netflix’s upcoming K-drama Can This Love Be Translated? is currently facing backlash in South Korea even before the show has been released. The controversy started due to the drama’s male lead, Sota Fukushi. His past remarks that recently came to light have sparked heated reactions from Korean viewers.
Sota Fukushi is a well-known Japanese actor who will be making his Korean debut with Can This Love Be Translated? However, the actor’s appearance on a documentary program that aired in Japan in 2015, marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, has angered Korean viewers.
In the show, Sota Fukushi read letters written by kamikaze pilots and talked to survivors of the war. A particular clip of Sota talking about his grandfather, who was a Kamikaze pilot before Japan surrendered in the war, caught people’s attention. While Japanese netizens empathised with the actor, South Korean viewers were outraged at the actor’s comments.

During World War II, Japan ruled Korea as a colony and forced Korean people into labour and s*xual slavery. Japanese rule in the country imposed suppressed Korean culture, and forcibly mobilised millions of Koreans for its war effort.
Korean viewers took to social media platforms to voice their opinions about Sota Fukushi and demanded that he be removed from Can This Love Be Translated? They criticised the production team for casting the actor as well, and some even called for the Netflix show’s boycott.
