What Is Emergency About?
Emergency is a biographical political thriller that revolves around the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the imposition of the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977, a pivotal moment in Indian political history. The film’s subject matter has stirred controversy, particularly within Sikh communities, due to its portrayal of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a slain Sikh militant. Several Sikh organizations, including the Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, had called for the film to be banned, citing concerns about the depiction of the Sikh community.
