The Age Gap Between Nawazuddin Siddiqui And Avneet Kaur In Tiku Weds Sheru Is Making Us Uncomfortable
Why isn't anyone offended now?

Kangana Ranaut has started her own production house, Manikarnika Films and earlier on June 12, the actress announced her first production under the banner. Sharing the poster of the upcoming film titled Tiku Weds Sheru featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur in lead roles. Written and directed by Sai Kabir, this film is going to directly premiere on the leading OTT platform Prime Video on June 23. But what’s shocking is the humongous age gap between the lead pair in Kangana’s first production.
Here’s my first production under my own banner…

Before we go any further, allow me to give some context. Kangana Ranaut initially wanted to make this film with Irrfan Khan but after his demise, the actress cast Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the male lead opposite Avneet Kaur. Tiku Weds Sheru began shooting in 2021 and was wrapped in February 2022. Following the wrap, during an interaction with the media, Kangana Ranaut revealed that she was warned against the age gap between the lead actors but she went ahead with it because it suits her story.
Citing the example of Tanu Weds Manu she said “So it was my belief that Avneet is the right person for this film. With Nawaz sir, uski jodi bohot badi hit rahegi, this is my feeling. But let’s see, baaki toh aap logon ke haath mein hai"

Speaking about the same, the main lead, Avneet Kaur said that she does not see the age difference between the lead couple in a film as a problem and that this isn’t the first time that this is happening. She also pointed out that in the past, despite the age gap between the actors, they have been appreciated and have received positive feedback while agreeing with Kangana Ranaut’s statement of the age gap being a requirement for the film.

Fine, thik hai. The age gap between the characters could be a requirement for the film but the age gap between the lead actors did not have to be necessary. From the looks of it, this film showcases the marriage between the lead characters and we just cannot digest this romance and the age gap. Not just because the actress is romancing a man her father’s age (I mean, we’re seen real-life couples with that kind of age gap so what is reel life!) but rather because the female actors do not get privilege like that.

No one blinks an eyelid upon seeing Nawazuddin Siddiqui romance Avneet Kaur but it’s not often that we see a Ranbir Kapoor romance a Rekha. I mean, we know what happened when Tabu romanced Ishaan Khatter.
I am just seeing this.. but Tabu and Ishaan Khatter 🤢 making out?!! 🤢 my eyes 🤢

It’s a little tough to digest the age gap between the lead actors mainly due to the double standards of the society. The kind of trolling and shaming that happens when the roles are reversed is downright disgusting. This is also proof of how misogyny and sexism in the entertainment industry operate. Female stars always age faster than male stars who seem to never age at all. We love actors with salt-and-pepper hair but do we also like actresses with salt-and-pepper hair? Nah, not at all!
In mainstream I don’t think so. In Darlings, Shefali Shah is romancing Roshan Mathew. I don’t know if that’s mainstream or not. But there’s this movie with Ishaan Khatter with Tabu called A Suitable Boy. Haven’t seen it but I know it’s about that kind of romance

But seriously, why is no one bothered by this age gap? Simple, because we’ve been seeing it since time immemorial. I mean, we saw this kind of age gap and much more in child marriages, did we not? And in many ways, this age gap between lead actors in films is a reflection of our social evil created due to social conditioning.
reminds me of this show where ishaan khattar romanced tabu omg https://t.co/wB9hG9KFMM

But come to think of it, we don’t make light of caste issues in our country, do we now? Why is that? Because while these caste issues are not very rampant in tier 1 cities, they continue to still be a problem in our society. In the same way, as per 2023 UNICEF data, India still accounts for one-third of the child brides in India and when we show this kind of age gap between leading actors, what message are we sending?
