From Kahaani To Gangubai: Watch These 5 Films To Make Navratri Celebration More Meaningful

When I was a child, I didn’t understand the significance of women-centric films. With my life experiences and witnessing this patriarchal society, I now realise how such films have tried to create a change in the notion that we’re weak. Navratri celebration has started; it’s important to realise that this festival is more than showing devotion to the goddess Durga. It is also about respecting and cherishing women. But sadly, we don’t get to see that in real life. Women-centric films like Kahani and Gangubai represent women from different walks of life, along with their suffering, reminding us that we are powerful and can channel the true goddess energy. People might not see that, but who needs their validation anyway, because these films do enforce that belief!

1. Kahaani

A pregnant woman, Vidya, tries everything in her power to search for her missing spouse. She takes the matter into her own hands and reveals a secret that she has carried all along. The female rage is perfectly depicted in this movie, and the performances by all the actors serve as the cherry on top!

2. Queen

This is a story that every woman can relate to. Rani goes on her honeymoon to Europe by herself after her fiancé calls off the wedding just before tying the knot. This trip gives her many eye-opening experiences, and she starts viewing life through a different lens. This story will inspire people who are going through a tough time! Additionally, this film is an example of what a flawless screenplay looks like.

3. Mirch Masala

This movie represents what a strong woman looks like and how she won’t let anyone cross her boundaries. Set in the 1940s, a village gets terrorised by Subhedar, but Sonbai, a fierce woman, refuses to bear his unjustified behaviour. She stands against him, challenging his male ego and taking a drastic step. Although this movie was released in 1987, it’s still relevant in 2025.

4. English Vinglish

English Vinglish tells an empowering story of every woman who is considered to be less than others, along with being disrespected by her own family members. After being constantly disrespected by her family for not knowing English, Shashi decides to learn this language as she attends an extended family member’s wedding overseas. In this process, she rediscovers herself and her identity. The movie has done a fantastic job of sharing Shashi’s point of view.

5. Gangubai Kathiawadi

This is a rather sad story of how Gangubai, a bubbly and charming girl with big dreams of becoming an actress, gets tricked by her boyfriend and is sold to a brothel. She accepts her fate, but after some time, she takes control of this cruel world and actually brings in revolution by fighting for s*x workers’ rights and making some men learn the lessons that they need to! Alia Bhatt’s screen presence as the titular character will keep the audience hooked to the screen!
