Darker skin tone is often seen as a problem in various countries. In South Korea, many women work hard to gain very light skin due to set beauty standards. This also creates hate for women with dark skin tones and blocks many paths for them. In a similar way, recently, OH MY GIRL member Mimi recalled being left out of a skincare ad over her skin colour. Did You Know OH MY Girl’s Mimi Was Left Out From Group Shoot Due To Dark Skin Tone?
K-pop star Mimi appeared on the show Heo Young-man’s Food Travel. She shared stories from her debut days with the group. At that time, she had no chances to appear alone on programmes. One event hurt her the most and has been engraved in her memory.
The group were getting ready for a skincare commercial and the concept was focused on light and fresh looks, like soft fairies. Mimi had tanned skin and a strong style which did not match the concept. So, she stayed alone in the waiting room and her group members left to film without her.
Mimi wanted to change and fit in and therefore she stood in front of mirrors for hours. She tried to act soft and innocent. Her efforts brought no change. Deep inside, she felt lost and sad.
Well, beauty standards in South Korea aim for pale skin. Many stars use creams to lighten their tone. It creates unfair treatment, as darker skin gets ignored or criticised often. Many people favour light skin and brands choose those faces. The lack of representation also makes young people feel that they must hide their natural colour.
