Lately, K-pop group KISS OF LIFE has landed in hot water over a cultural appropriation controversy. The backlash from a live broadcast created a stir on the internet. Many fans stopped stanning them, and the group’s appearance at KCON LA was also cancelled. Even though Julie personally apologised recently, it wasn’t enough to calm the storm. Amid all the criticism now, their upcoming song ‘kbye’ has gone viral on X, but not for a good reason.
Recently, the group dropped a teaser for ‘kbye’. The beats and lyrics of the song ignited a heated debate online. Some internet users thought that the song was a diss track towards haters. This didn’t sit well with many, as one user wrote, “I feel like the worst possible thing Kiof could do after their controversy is release a hater diss track.” In response, another wrote, “It would be really weird if they caused most of the people not to forgive or if they were either Hispanic or Black like me.”
But is it really meant to be a diss track? Well, Julie clarified the song’s intent on a live stream. She stated that ‘Kbye’ was inspired by heartbreak and dedicated to past relationships that hurt the members.
More On KISS OF LIFE Racism Controversy
The trouble began in February 2025 during a live stream. KISS OF LIFE members Julie, Natty, Belle, and Haneul allegedly used certain gestures and phrases which some fans found offensive. They accused them of mocking Black culture. The internet was not at all happy. In response, the group released an apology note. Not just the note; during a recent live stream, Julie personally apologised. She said that the group found it tough to discuss recent events, but being mature, they knew they had to own up to their actions, good or bad.
Further, they admitted their mistake and spent time figuring out how to learn from it and move on and promised to educate themselves to avoid repeating it. Lastly, she apologised to the Black and Latino communities. Some fans forgave them and appreciated their sincere apology; however, others thought it was because the group’s comeback is near.
